Life Sciences Patent Preparation and Prosecution

Course Description

This course will cover patent preparation and prosecution with an eye towards life science-type patents. Patent drafting and prosecution is a high-level skill set requiring efficiency and a wide knowledge base. Students will build on their basic claim drafting skills by learning the rules, regulations, customs, and practices for dealing with the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) when filing and prosecuting patent applications. Students will draft eight complete patent specifications and claims as well as four responses to four USPTO Office Actions. The course format is 1-2 hours per week of traditional lecture and discussion to cover theory and general principles plus regularly scheduled clinicals with a practicing patent prosecution attorney. During the clinical, the practicing attorney will discuss and provide feedback on the patent applications and responses prepared for the course.
