Competition Overview

Georgia Tech- Savannah and the Savannah campus of the Center for Education Integrating Mathematics, Science and Computing (CEISMC) are pleased to announce their affiliation with Elementary Science Olympiad (ESO). CEISMC and Georgia Tech- Savannah offers the regional competition for students in the four-county areas of Bryan, Chatham, Effingham, and Liberty Counties for Science Olympiad Division A. Competitors from this event, advance to the statewide competition in Kennesaw, Georgia. Georgia Tech – Savannah is a qualifying event for state. More information about ESO is available here.

2023 Competition Information

ESO Division A competition will be held on March 11th, 2023.

For 30+ years, ESO has led a revolution in science education. What began as a grassroots assembly of science teachers is now one of the premiere science competitions in the nation, providing rigorous, standards-based challenges to nearly 7,000 teams in all 50 states. ESO's ever-changing line-up of events in all STEM disciplines exposes students to practicing scientists and career choices, and energizes classroom teachers with a dynamic content experience.

How many students can I register for the 2023 Savannah Regional Elementary Science Olympiad competition? 

Each school can register 2 teams of 20 students with 2 alternates. If you team advances to state, only 20 students per team is permissible. 

What are the registration fees for the 2023 Savannah Regional ESO? 

Registration fees are $75 per team. 

What does the $75 registration fee covers? 

The registration fee covers the participation of up to 22 students, lunch for all participating students listed on the Final Registration Form, and lunch for 2 coaches. 

When does registration opens for the 2023 Savannah Regional ESO competition? 

Registration for ESO will open in early January 2023.

Do I need to attend the Mandatory Coaches meeting? 

Yes, all schools wishing to participate at the 2023 Savannah Regional ESO must send a coach or representative to the Coaches Meeting. 

When is the Mandatory Coaches Meeting?

This is my schools first time participating in Elementary Science Olympiad, is there a school that can mentor me and my team? 

Yes, there are coaches that are available to mentor new coaches. Please email us at gtsoutreach@gatech.edu and we will connect you with a mentor. 

Has an event schedule (times) been finalized yet?  

The schedule will be available in early January 2023 and will also be included in the packet of information. 

To whom do I need to have the check made out for the fees?  

If possible, please pay using our secure online system with P-card or credit cards. 

*We can accept a school check. Please make it out to Georgia Institute of Technology, c/o Timothy Cone, 210 Technology Circle Savannah, Georgia 31407 

The registration system will create an invoice.  

Should we bring our own pencils, scissors, calculators, etc.?  

No. All materials will be provided for 2023 Elementary Science Olympiad events. 

Will we have a base camp so the non-competing students won't be wandering around?  

Yes. The 2023 Elementary Science Olympiad packet will have details and ideas about base camps. 

Will coaches and/or parents be allowed to watch the actual testing and events during the competition?  

Coaches and parents must remain at base camp once competition begins. Guests without competing teams may be invited to encourage their future participation at upcoming competitions, but no other observers are allowed. 

What if I have a sick kid the day before the event? 

Fill in with an alternate students and correct your team roster and bring it with you to the Saturday event. 

What if I have a sick kid the day of the event? 

Substitute with an alternate and correct the roster on Monday with your principal or building official. 

What if a kid wants to go to soccer or dance then come out to the competition? 

The entire team has to check in between 8-8:30 am.

What if it rains? 

In the event that it rains, we have a severe weather date scheduled for Saturday, March 25th, 2023. Any cancellation will be communicated to team coaches the Thursday before (or sooner if we can tell very bad weather is en route). 

Can Georgia Tech pay for our trip to state competition? 

Expenses related to the state competition are the responsibility of the winning school. 

Do the same kids who come to the regional qualifier have to go to the state if we win? 

No, your competition team roster is a school decision. 

Can the students who participate in events be selected through a school competition? 

Team member selection for regional qualifier participation is a school level decision. 

Will it be fun? 

Absolutely. STEM is always fun!
