The Basics

Has an event schedule (times) been finalized yet? The schedule will be available in January and will be included in the packet of information.

To whom do I need to have the check made out for the fees? If possible, please pay using our secure online system with P-card or credit cards.

*We can accept a school check. Please make it out to Georgia Institute of Technology, c/o Danyelle Sauers, 210 Technology Circle Savannah, Georgia 31407

*We can create an invoice upon request.

Should we bring our own pencils, scissors, calculators, etc.? No. All materials will be provided for 2018 Elementary Science Olympiad events.

Will we have a base camp so the non-competing students won't be wandering around? Yes. The 2018 Elementary Science Olympiad packet will have details and ideas about base camps.

Will coaches and/or parents be allowed to watch the actual testing and events during the competition? Coaches and parents must remain at base camp once competition begins. Guests without competing teams may be invited to encourage their future participation, but no other observers are allowed.

Events

A is for Anatomy will be a 30-minute competition. This competition is one of the three competitions of the event that will begin at 8:30. Make sure the participants for this competition arrive before 8:30 in order complete registration check in.

Aerodynamics will be a 30-minute competition. All materials will be store brand. This competition is one of the three competitions of the event that will begin at 8:30. Make sure the participants for this competition arrive before 8:30 in order complete registration check in.

Bridge Building will be an hour competition. All materials will be store brand. Follow book for details.

Categories will be a 30-minute competition. Follow book for details.

Chopper Building will be a 30-minute competition. All materials will be provided. 

Clay Boats will be a 30-minute competition. Each team will receive clay to sculpt their boats once they arrive to the competition room.

Cool It is a 45-minute competition. All materials will be store brand.

How Do You Spell Science? will be an hour competition. Science words will be common to K-6 science books from earth, life, and physical science.

Mystery Boxes will be a 30-minute competition. Follow book for details.

Pasta Bridges is an hour-long competition. Each team will receive 22 pieces of pasta to construct their bridge. All other directions will follow the book.

Reflection Relay will be a 30-minute competition. Follow book for details.

Science Jeopardy will be a 30-minute competition. Follow book for details. The questions will be based on the Georgia Performance Standards.

Straw Egg Drop will be an hour-long competition. All straws will be non-flexible uniform straws.

Straw Tower will be an hour-long competition. We will not be using straight pins. Competitors will be given tape. All straws will be non-flexible uniform straws.

Surfing the Net will be an hour-long competition. Follow book for details. This competition is one of the three competitions of the event that will begin at 8:30 (earlier than previous years). Make sure the participants for this competition arrive before 8:30 in order to get registration done.

Other Great Questions

What if I have a sick kid the day before the event?
Fill in with a substitute if you have one and correct your team roster and bring it with you to the Saturday event.

What if I have a sick kid the day of the event?
Substitute as best you can and correct the roster on Monday with your principal or building official.

What if a kid wants to go to soccer and then come out to the competition?
The whole team needs to check in between 8-8:30 am.

But what if his or her event isn’t until 1 pm?

The whole team needs to check in between 8-8:30 am. 

What if they have dance and want to come late?
The whole team needs to check in between 8-8:30 am.

What if it rains?
In the event that it rains, we have a severe weather date. Any cancellation will be communicated to team coaches the night before (or sooner if we can tell very bad weather is en route).

Can Georgia Tech pay for our trip to state competition?
Expenses related to the state competition are the responsibility of the winning school.

Do the same kids who come to the regional qualifier have to go to the state event if we win?
No, your competition team roster is a school decision.

Can the students who participate in regional event be selected through a school competition?
Team member selection for regional qualifier participation is a school level decision.
