Georgia Tech-Savannah Hires Former Savannah-Chatham County School System Teacher
Georgia Tech has named Carolyn Perry as program director for Georgia Tech’s Center for Education Integrating Science, Mathematics, and Computing (CEISMC) in Savannah.
Perry’s role as program director will use her years of expertise to continue CEISMC’s outreach efforts to improve science education in coastal Georgia and South Carolina, which includes summer programming for children in grades K-12, workshops and professional development for teachers, and opportunities for university students in the region.
“Carolyn is a welcome addition to Georgia Tech-Savannah and Georgia Tech Professional Education. Her selection for the position continues our path forward, and puts in place the ability to expand offerings along our continuum of learning, further building upon CEISMC’s existing partnerships with the NASA Electronic Professional Development Network (ePDN) and Georgia’s Race to the Top activities,” said Nelson Baker, dean of Georgia Tech Professional Education.
CEISMC (pronounced like "seismic") is a partnership uniting the Georgia Institute of Technology with educational groups, schools, corporations, and opinion leaders throughout the state of Georgia. Leaning heavily on the expertise of Georgia Tech faculty, CEISMC is dedicated to the enhancement of science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) education in primary and secondary education. It actively participates in efforts to create systemic changes leading to improved appreciation and performance in STEM areas for all students (especially those under-represented in STEM education), and disseminate best practices to districts and through scholarly works.
“I know there will be many exciting opportunities and partnerships ahead, not only for organizations within Georgia Tech, but also with other educational programs within  Savannah, Hilton Head, and the surrounding communities,” said Perry. “I’m excited to put my passion for STEM learning to use with CEISMC as we grow the K-12 outreach program.”
Perry has been a resident of Savannah for the last 20 years and holds a B.A. and M.Ed. in Education from the University of Florida, and an Ed.D. in Curriculum and Instruction from Georgia Southern University. She is an adjunct professor in the School of Education at Armstrong Atlantic State University, and previously taught for the Savannah-Chatham County Public School System for five years. Perry is certified in 15 fields including special education. She leads an award-winning STEM-oriented Girl Scout Troop in Savannah and started a summer STEM program in the Savannah area through Invent Now.
