Course Description

Like problem solving, everyone has the ability to improve their creativity skills. As team leaders, it's important to know how to foster your team's creativity and promote problem solving skills. In the Creativity Hacks course, you will explore how to substantially improve individual creativity skills using simple techniques and tools. In addition, this course will demonstrate how engineers, as group facilitators, may effectively use these skills to improve the problem solving with their teams.

SYSTEMS VIEW OF CREATIVITY

  • Big “C” versus little “c” creativity
  • How to be an original thinker
  • The characteristics of the creative person
  • The incubation model of creativity
  • The relationship of flow and creativity

THE COGNITIVE AND NEUROSCIENCE VIEW OF CREATIVITY

  • Dispel some myths about how the brain works
  • Introduction to a Neuroscientific model of creativity
  • Discuss how memory works and gives rise to creative thinking
  • Introduction to conceptual blending and its relationship to creativity

TOOLS AND TECHNIQUES FOR CREATIVE THINKING

  • What active thinking is and how can we use it to break out of existing patterns of thought
  • Introduction and practice of six divergent thinking techniques
  • Introduction to tools for group creativity

CASE STUDY

  • Overview and practice of a popular visual problem solving methodology for both individuals and groups
