The Georgia Institute of Technology has launched an online version of the Master of Science in International Security that debuted as a full-time, residential program in 2020. A collaboration between the Sam Nunn School of International Affairs in Georgia Tech's Ivan Allen College of Liberal Arts and Georgia Tech Professional Education (GTPE), the online program offers the same curriculum as the on-campus program but features a flexible, 100% remote design that enables working professionals to earn their master’s without interrupting their careers.

This will be the first Georgia Tech online program taught entirely by Ivan Allen College of Liberal Arts faculty.

“The M.S. in International Security is just a first step in the College’s expansion into online learning,” says Kaye Husbands Fealing, dean and Ivan Allen Jr. Chair of the Ivan Allen College of Liberal Arts. “As we are re-envisioning liberal arts education in the 21st century, online and blended course offerings will play a vital supplemental role in expanding access and flexibility for students.”

The degree supports career paths in foreign and security policymaking, defense sector planning, and intelligence activities. Sectors include government agencies, private enterprises, and non-profit entities. The 10-course curriculum provides a solid understanding of emerging technologies, defense policy, and geopolitical strategy along with tools for systematically identifying, assessing, and responding to changing dynamics between governments, transnational, and sub-national entities.

“Organizations and governments need professionals with holistic but nuanced understanding of the current global landscape, who can distill historical and contemporary information across policy domains and various regional and national contexts into patterns and drivers of strategic behavior to guide decision-making at all levels,” says Adam Stulberg, chair of the Sam Nunn School of International Affairs in the Ivan Allen College of Liberal Arts. “The Master of Science in International Security provides a strong educational framework for professionals looking to develop these insights and to anticipate what is next, and what threats and opportunities we see on the horizon that will carry global and strategic impact.”

With the complexities of the current geopolitical environment, it is essential that professionals in this field have high-quality, accessible learning options that provide real-world applications and exposure to emerging technologies.

"Meeting learners where they are is paramount, especially when they are working professionals,” says Stephen Ruffin, associate dean of academic programs at GTPE. “Our long history of expertise in learning design and student services for online programs allows us to utilize technology to provide a high-caliber academic experience that is supported by industry-leading experts and research to a broader audience, directly aligning with our commitment to lifetime learning.”

Jenna Jordan, associate chair and associate professor at the Sam Nunn School of International Affairs in the Ivan Allen College of Liberal Arts, agrees.

“Technology and foreign policy are changing at lightning speed and there’s high demand for professionals who can keep pace,” she explains. “They must be able to quickly assess and develop responses to a range of international events – from large-scale environmental disasters to military and/or cyberwarfare activity to ongoing international relations. With GTPE’s help, the Master of Science in International Security, Online will provide full-time professionals, including those looking to advance their military careers, with greater access to these essential skills.”
