Building Skills that Stack and Careers that Move Forward

Behind the success of Georgia Tech FlexStack are the program’s instructors, whose personal experiences help them meet learners where they are

What if advancing your career didn’t require stepping away from it?

That’s the idea behind the Georgia Tech FlexStack program — and part of the College of Lifetime Learning's broader vision to support education across every stage of life. A modular, guided approach to learning that helps professionals build in-demand skills one course at a time, FlexStack has continued to grow since its launch, offering certificates in fields like Python, Structured Query Language (SQL), and data visualization, and most recently the Python AI Principles Certificate has been added to the program's roster.

While FlexStack’s structure is unique, what makes it truly special are the people behind it.

The program’s instructors bring more than just subject-matter expertise — they bring lived experience. Each of the three members of the teaching team know how to navigate career pivots, learn new skills under pressure, and experience firsthand what it takes to grow in a rapidly changing world.

“Technology evolves and so do people,” Academic Program Director and Lecturer Peter Graening says. “Our role as instructors is to make sure that students aren’t just keeping up with the rapidly changing world of technology, but have the proficiency and fluency to shape what comes next. FlexStack provides the fundamental building blocks to make that possible.”

With instructors who meet learners where they are — whether they are building technical skills or expanding an existing foundation — the end result is more than a credential. It’s also a shift in confidence.

“By the end of a course, we want students to have the confidence to apply their new skills, portable assets they can demonstrate to employers, and a next step forward in their career or education,” Lecturer Theodore J. “TJ” LaGrow explains.
