Online Masters in Analytics Faculty Recognized for Exceptional Contributions in Online Teaching and Learning
Program and faculty named finalist for 2020 edX Prize
Frederic Bien, Joel Sokol, and Richard Vuduc have been named as finalists for the 2020 edX Prize for Exceptional Contributions in Online Teaching and Learning. The trio were among 10 finalists from across the global for their work in the Georgia Tech Online Master of Science in Analytics (OMS Analytics) and associated Analytics: Essential Tools and Methods MicroMasters® programs, which launched in 2017 on the edX platform.
As the second affordable, at-scale online master's program from Georgia Tech, the OMS Analytics and edX MicroMasters are taught by Georgia Tech’s leading faculty from the Colleges of Business, Computing, and Engineering. The faculty leading and teaching in the program are world-class academicians and are as engaged with the online program and its students, as they are for the residential master’s program in analytics. To date the programs enroll nearly 5,000 students.
"By offering these programs, Georgia Tech and edX are breaking new ground and solving a national need: to move learners from a non-degree to a degree environment while maintaining the same quality standards in course development and instructional activities, and doing so at-scale," said Nelson Baker, dean of Professional Education. "It's been pioneering as a top 10-ranked institution to develop affordable degree programs, and the success can be attributed to the structure and design of the OMS programs."
With its OMS degrees, Georgia Tech provides high-quality education at a scale and rate not done before. The scalability of the OMS Analytics enables Georgia Tech to accommodate qualified applicants from the edX MicroMasters program and offer them the opportunity to earn an advanced degree. Since the program began, 400 learners from the edX Micromasters program have applied for Advanced Standing in the OMS Analytics.
"These innovative programs help solve a national problem of accessibility to high-quality graduate-level education and presents a rare example of how such a pathway can work successfully at scale," notes Nisha Botchwey, associate dean of Academic Programs. "The OMS Analytics and the edX MicroMasters can serve as a blueprint for how universities open doors for more learners to pursue degrees."
