"Prioritizing employee health through preventative hazard identification and mitigation is the right thing to do, full stop.   • Chemical hazards - Chemicals such as solvents, acids, cleaning agents, fumes, vapors, dusts, and gases can cause respiratory issues, skin irritation, organ damage, or long-term illnesses. These exposures may come from handled products or be generated during work processes such as welding or material crushing.
  • Biological hazards - Biological hazards may lead to infections or allergic reactions due to exposure to living organisms (such as mold or pathogens). These can be uniquely problematic in that, if allowed to spread, they may affect a significant portion of the workforce. 
  • Airborne hazards - Airborne contaminants involve chemicals or particles that may be suspended in the air for long periods of time. These could include fumes, dust, or vapors, which frequently give rise to respiratory damage and diminish indoor air quality.
  • Physical hazards - This can include a wide range of conditions, from extreme temperatures to vibrations to noise exposure. Such issues could result in heat exhaustion, hearing damage or deafness, fatigue, and mental or emotional harm.
  • Ergonomic hazards - Ergonomic hazards can lead to musculoskeletal issues because of repetitive tasks that place considerable strain on the body. These are not only painful but may also prevent employees from carrying out critical workplace tasks. Examples of ergonomic hazards include repetitive motions or prolonged awkward postures. 

These hazards may arise through direct exposure, when employees handle potentially harmful substances as part of their job, or process-generated exposure, when risks emerge as a byproduct of workplace operations. Both require proactive evaluation and control within a comprehensive safety program.

Industrial hygiene is critical because it strengthens an organization’s ability to prevent illness and protect workers over the long term. While regulatory compliance is an important driver, the value of industrial hygiene extends beyond meeting standards. 

"Industrial hygiene is most impactful when considered in tandem with procurement, quality, facilities, and operations. If we [industrial hygienists] can evaluate a chemical product’s hazardous characteristics before implementation, we can offer strategies for safe use procedures — or even a less dangerous substitute chemical,” explains Warren. “For example, a product with a highly regulated chemical component may require a company to install and maintain an exhaust ventilation system, continually purchase disposable personal protective equipment, or even provide annual medical surveillance to exposed employees, all of which are expensive and on-going control strategies. Considering options or alternatives through an industrial hygiene perspective early on can result in reduced or eliminated employee exposure, impacting profitability and resources."

A dull saw blade creates increased dangerous noise levels for workers, but it also impacts product quality and task speed. Leaks in production line piping or ductwork create airborne chemical exposures for employees and lead to wasted product."
