Online Master of Science in Analytics

For admission into the OMS Analytics program, all applicants are expected to have:

1. An undergraduate Bachelor’s degree or equivalent from an accredited institution.
2. At least one college-level course or equivalent knowledge in:

• Probability/statistics
• Computer programming in Python at the level of Introduction to Computing in Python*
• Calculus and basic linear algebra**

*Even if you have experience in some high-level language -- C, C++, Java, Python, FORTRAN -- it still would be helpful to take CS 1301 (free online) prior to starting the OMS Analytics coursework.

**Applicants who lack a background in mathematics or computing may still be admitted. In these cases, students are expected either to learn the necessary materials on their own before beginning the program or take one or more preparatory course after being admitted. If you plan to take any preparatory courses before the program begins, we recommend you provide this information in your application packet, including course information and timeframe for completion.

No applicant is automatically admitted into the program. All applications are reviewed by a faculty committee to ensure those admitted can succeed in the program. 

The best advice is to build up your background knowledge in probability and statistics, computer programming, calculus, and linear algebra. If you don't have much analytics-oriented background, gaining this knowledge will give you a preview of what the OMS Analytics curriculum will be like, and help position you for successfully maximizing your learning in our program. 

Official transcripts are delivered directly to Georgia Tech from your academic institution (certified PDFs or sealed, physical transcripts). Other forms or types of transcripts are considered unofficial.

You will have the option to upload additional supporting documents when submitting your online application (documents should be .pdf files). Note that if you do this, you will not need to mail your documents at this time. But if you are admitted, you will be asked to submit the official documents.

Secure electronic certified transcripts (E-transcripts) should be sent to transcripts@grad.gatech.edu. This is a special e-mail address only for secure electronic transcripts delivered via National Student Clearinghouse, eScrip-Safe, Parchment, and Truecopy Credentials. Please check with the registrar or records office at your college/university to see if they provide secure electronic certified transcript service. (Transcripts sent as email attachments are not accepted as official documents.)

Any documents that are not uploaded with your online application will need to be mailed in one envelope (with the name of the applicant as it appears on the application written on the front) to Graduate Studies. No. A bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited U.S. institution or its equivalent, demonstrated academic excellence, and evidence of preparation in their chosen field sufficient to ensure successful graduate study are minimum requirements for applicants to graduate programs at Georgia Tech.

Yes. In accordance with University System of Georgia policy, students admitted to Georgia Tech must verify their lawful presence in the United States prior to enrollment. Visit the Georgia Tech Graduate Studies website to learn more about the policy for U.S. and non U.S. citizens.

The OMS Analytics application will ask you to report your criminal and academic misconduct history and will be verified by Georgia Tech’s Office of Graduate Admissions.

To meet the math prerequisite, you’ll need to have covered:

• Differentiation and integration in multiple variables
• Basic linear algebra
• Basic understanding of vectors and matrices, including how to add and multiply and how to invert a matrix

Some familiarity with eigenvalues and eigenvectors is also helpful.

Applications are accepted year-round. Please review the How to Apply section to ensure you have everything you need for a complete application.

Applications are submitted electronically and include a nonrefundable application fee. You will need to upload the following items as part of your application: 

• Official transcripts from each institution attended. Transcripts not in English must be accompanied by a certified translation. If you are admitted, you will be asked to send an additional official transcript. You will receive instructions at that time. 
• Lawful Presence Document (U.S. Citizens Only). Applicants must verify their lawful presence in the United States prior to enrollment. 
• English Proficiency (International Students Only). The language of instruction at Georgia Tech is English. With some exceptions, international applicants must take and submit scores for the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL). Minimum test scores and expectations are found on our International Applicants tab. 
• References. You will initiate the process through the online application by entering the name and email addresses of three references. Upon submission of your application, an email will be sent to the recommender requesting a brief online recommendation. Please inform your references that they must submit the form for your application to be complete. 
• Test Scores (Optional). You may choose to submit standardized test scores, most commonly GRE or GMAT. This is not required for admission into the program. 

Program-Specific Questions/Materials 

• Personal Statements. Describe your specific career goals and objectives, the decision to pursue an advanced degree, and other information that may be useful to the admissions committee.  
• Professional Resume. A listing of your professional experience and uploaded to the online application. 

Applicants are not required to submit GRE or GMAT scores. If you have already the GRE or GMAT and believe your score may strengthen your application, feel free to submit it.

You will need to apply to the online program separately to be reviewed within that specific applicant pool. Our system currently does not allow you to submit two applications for the same program, same term.

Once you have submitted your application, contact Graduate Studies and request that they move you to the online application for the term you wish to apply. They can also add the recommendations you included in your original on-campus Analytics application to the online application.

Students may not be enrolled in the OMS Analytics and another Georgia Tech program at the same time. While we're exploring ways to offer the option of concurrent enrollment to OMS Analytics students in future, we are currently unable to do so. 

We allow a maximum of two applications at the same time for any one term. You are required to follow the full application process for each program since you will be assessed for each program separately. Letters of recommendation must be specific to the program for which you’re applying. 

Your letters of recommendation must be up to date and specific to the program to which you are applying. You can use the same recommenders.

Yes. The admissions committee for this program reviews applications individually, so you will need to follow the full application process for the OMS Analytics program and submit all the required documentation even if you have already submitted it for a different degree.

At Georgia Tech, you are considered an international applicant if you are: 

• Living outside of the United States and will require an F-1 or J-1 visa to study in the United States,
• Living in the United States on a nonimmigrant visa,
• Going through the process of becoming a United States permanent resident,
• Living outside of the U.S. and planning to apply to an online master's degree program as a non-U.S. citizen or non-U.S. permanent resident

Our program-specific accepted tests and minimum score requirement for admission are listed below. Please note that meeting Georgia Tech’s minimum score does not guarantee admission since some programs (such as this one) have higher score requirements.

• Official IELTS Academic test score (send scores to Georgia Institute of Technology, "Graduate")
  • IELTS ≥ 7.5 overall (with a minimum band score for Reading, Listening, and Speaking of 6.5; minimum band score for Writing is 6.0)
• Official internet based (iBT) TOEFL score (send scores to Georgia Institute of Technology, "Graduate", institute code 5248)
  • TOEFL iBT ≥ 100 overall (with each section also scoring 20 or higher)

We recommend that you achieve acceptable scores prior to submitting your application. Scores must be no more than two years old on the day you are scheduled to begin your graduate studies. Failure to satisfy the English Language Proficiency requirement will impact our ability to review an application.

If you attended an institution outside of the United States and the academic documents are not in English, we require you to upload an English translation issued by the college or university in addition to the native language documents. If your institution does not provide documents in English, you can use an official translation agency. Be sure to order a word for word translation of your documents. Since the program is 100% online, international students applying to the program will not be offered visas.

Tuition and fees are charged per semester and are due at the beginning of each term. No tuition or fees are charged if no enrollment occurs that term.

The Georgia Tech Bursar’s Office processes refunds via EFT, also known as Direct Deposit, Monday through Friday. Refunds and overpayments are electronically disbursed to the student’s checking or savings account and should be in the students account on the following day or sooner. You are not always eligible for a refund when dropping a course, so please read over the refund policy. 

Transfer credit is generally not accepted. If you complete the Analytics: Essential Tools and Methods MicroMasters program through edX and choose to continue your studies in analytics, you may apply for advanced standing credit. Courses from this edX MicroMasters program may be considered for credit, but Georgia Tech cannot guarantee that credit will be granted.

We generally do not give credit for courses completed at other universities. However, you are welcome to include the information in your application, and we will review it if you are accepted into the program.

Course credits that have already been used for another degree cannot be used again for the OMS Analytics. However, you do not need to repeat the same courses for the OMS Analytics. Instead, you can select different courses to make up the required credit hours. 

You can get credit for relevant courses completed as part of the Online Master of Science in Computer Science if the credit has not already been used for another degree. 

It depends on the Ph.D. program in question. The decision to accept OMS Analytics courses is up to the home department of the Ph.D. program in which the student is interested. 

We require all applicants to follow the same application process, so you will need to submit an application for the OMS Analytics program and follow the full application process. You can get credit for relevant courses completed as part of your master’s program if the credit has not already been applied to another degree.

The curriculum represents a subset of the on-campus curriculum, allowing for a full MS in analytics. Visit the Curriculum page to view all requirements.

The OMS Analytics degree is tailored to the learner’s interests and goals through the selection of a specialized degree track. Analytical Tools, Computational Data Analytics, and Business Analytics are the tracks that are currently available.

We highly recommend OMS Analytics students have access to a broadband or other high-speed internet connection. Some courses may also require the use of a headset with a microphone and webcam. Using your mobile device, iPad, or tablet as the primary or only device is not recommended. Review our technology requirements on the Student Resources page for more information on more specific platform requirements.

You are allowed to complete two classes each semester. Many of our students working full-time with other commitments complete one course per semester. If you have reduced working hours and no extensive obligations, you are welcome to take additional classes. Students can contact our advising department and request a credit hour increase to register for extra classes. This request must be initiated each semester before classes begin.

Both R and Python will be taught in introductory core courses, so all students will be exposed to both languages from early on in the program. For advanced coursework, students will be expected to be familiar with R and Python. The course ISYE 6501 includes R, and the course CSE 6040 includes Python. Both ISYE 6501 and CSE 6040 are introductory courses, so students will be exposed to R and Python early on in the program.   

Yes. These tools are covered in the required core course, CSE 6242 Data and Visual Analytics, so every student will have the opportunity to learn about them.

We would need the following from your manager:

• Project Certification Form (PCF): Sent directly to the manager to confirm support for the practicum and submit a project proposal for faculty review. Due before the practicum term.
• Contributor Evaluation Form (CEF): Sent directly to the manager to review student performance and provide feedback. Due at the end of the practicum term.

The practicum is 10-15 weeks depending on the semester and the process starts several months in advance. 

• Fall (15 weeks): Process begins in mid-May with the Practicum Interest Survey sent to the student
• Spring (15 weeks): Process begins in mid-September with the Practicum Interest Survey sent to the student
• Summer (10 weeks): Process begins in mid-February with the Practicum Interest Survey sent to the student

This is difficult to estimate, since all students have different learning styles. A general rule is three hours a week per credit hour, in addition to viewing the course videos. Therefore, someone taking two courses at three credit hours each can expect to spend roughly 18 to 20 hours per week on coursework.

Most course materials will be provided free of charge online, however some courses may require additional purchases for materials.

The total workload is the same for the online program as the residential program. The weekly or hourly workload depends on whether students are full-time or part-time, and how quickly students wish to complete the program. We consider students to be full-time if they are not employed and can dedicate the majority of their time to the program. Part-time students are those who have full-time jobs and cannot dedicate themselves full-time to the program. 

There will be a tiered structure of human support for students, typically involving electronic (email, discussion board) interaction with course personnel, including the instructor of record.

The courses are typically taught asynchronously, which means learners access and study content anytime, anywhere.

However, there may be synchronous virtual office hours with faculty and teaching assistants or for group project meetings, which students may need to attend in real time. These sessions are often recorded for later access.

Exams, in general, are open for a period of time, during which students take the exam in a shorter time period. For example, you would have two hours within a 48-hour period to take the exam.  

Most classes in the OMS Analytics program have proctored exams. A proctored exam is like one you would take in the classroom. This means that your instructor may limit your access to textbooks, notebooks, notes, or other reference materials as well as to electronic devices, web sites, or people. These exams are delivered via a tool called HonorLock, which is an Online Proctoring solution.

HonorLock is utilized for student identity verification and to ensure academic integrity. HonorLock provides student identity verification via facial and ID photos. For courses that utilize proctored exams, HonorLock employs AI (Artificial Intelligence) technology to notify course instructors of potential academic integrity violations. Course instructors can review video of the potential violations and resolve potential academic integrity issues. For each course in which the HonorLock is used, you will have the opportunity to take an on-boarding test, so you are familiar with how it works. Students in these courses are expected to comply with the Georgia Tech Academic Honor Code.

Grading is the privilege and responsibility of Georgia Tech’s instructors. We use current and new strategies to encourage academic integrity, including visually verifying your identity against a government issued identity card or passport. We leverage MOOC technology to automate aspects of the grading process, using a significant portion of the tuition to support the scaling of student evaluation through such technologies. Similar techniques already are in use at Georgia Tech to handle grading in classes with very large enrollments.

The degree requires a minimum of 36 credit hours (12 courses) for completion.

The typical time for full-time students to complete the degree will be about one year, and two to three years for many part-time students. We will allow for longer enrollments—up to six years—for those students who need greater flexibility.

Yes. International students applying to the degree program are required to submit a TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) score of at least 100 as part of their application.

You will get experience with R, Python, Hadoop, Spark, SAS, Tableau, d3, SQLite, Pig, Hive, HBase, GitHub, Amazon Web Services, and others. 

The program balances theory and project-based work to enable students to develop a deep understanding of concepts in analytics and to apply this conceptual knowledge to real-world projects as part of their course work. The program is designed to prepare students for optimal on-the-job performance while they expand their expertise and grow professionally over time. 

The program culminates with the six-hour practicum, a practical analytics experience that enables you to apply previously learned concepts and classroom teachings to a project of significant interest. The objective of the practicum is to properly define and scope the analytics project, apply appropriate methodologies, create value, manage the project, and provide results in writing.

Yes. The degree program is designed to be flexible enough to accommodate the needs of adult learners and working professionals.

Yes. Graduation ceremonies are held on campus at the end of the fall and spring semesters. We welcome your participation, but it is not required.

This interdisciplinary degree is conferred by three Georgia Tech schools:

• The College of Computing
• The Scheller College of Business
• The College of Engineering

The degree name for both is Master of Science in Analytics. The modality (on-campus or online) does not appear on the diploma or transcript.

No. The program does not include job placement support.

The online master’s degree in analytics and the on-campus master’s degree in analytics are the same program as far as academic rigor and requirements are concerned, but online students have fewer elective choices. The electives offered are the most widely requested courses in the on-campus program.

The on-campus master’s degree is a premium tuition program that includes boot camps, dedicated placement professionals, and other add on features not available to online students. Although available to all on-campus students, these are supplemental services that on-campus students have the option to use but are not required to do so to complete the program.

The online master’s degree allows students to learn at different times throughout the day, and to benefit from faculty access on forums and a global network of fellow learners through Canvas's interactive features.

Yes. Admission in the on-campus degree is limited and we cannot guarantee that you will be accepted. It is much easier to transfer from the on-campus degree to the online degree because we can accommodate more students. 

The Analytics: Essential Tools and Methods MicroMasters program is comprised of three foundational courses from Georgia Tech’s full, interdisciplinary OMS Analytics degree.

The foundational courses are: 

• ISYE 6501 - Introduction to Analytics Modeling
• MGT 6203 - Data Analytics in Business
• CSE 6040 - Computing for Data Analytics

This program is offered by edX and is not a Georgia Tech degree. However, the required outcomes, course experience, and course assessments are identical between the three MicroMasters program courses and the three corresponding OMS Analytics courses. 

The Analytics: Essential Tools and Methods MicroMasters courses are open for enrollment to anyone. For learners who want to earn a MicroMasters certificate as a standalone credential or would like the courses to be considered for credit if accepted to the Online Master of Science in Analytics Degree program, the cost is $825 per course, which amounts to a total of $2,475.

Learners who complete the Analytics: Essential Tools and Methods MicroMasters program certificate through edX and choose to continue their studies in analytics may apply the courses to the OMS Analytics degree program at Georgia Tech.

In order for one or more of the MicroMasters courses to count as credit towards the Master’s degree, you must first apply to Georgia Tech and be accepted into the program.  If admitted, learners may petition to have up to 9 hours (3 courses) from the EdX MicroMasters credential counted as advanced standing credit toward the total of 36 hours required for the degree. 

Please note that a petition for advanced standing does not guarantee approval, and in some cases these courses may need to be repeated for them to count toward your degree (grades and academic integrity are reviewed). Moreover, learners in the MicroMasters program are not Georgia Tech students and do not have access to Georgia Tech resources. Additionally, you will need to earn a B (80%) or better in the courses to be eligible to petition for credit.
