Human Factors Engineering for Flight Deck Design, Test, and Airworthiness Certification Preparation

Course Description

This Georgia Tech training provides learners with a practical application of Human Factors Engineering (HFE) for a broad scope of personnel involved in the management, engineering, and operations of aircraft. The course is relevant for individuals working in the aerospace, defense, and logistics industries and includes a specific focus on the design and documentation of the flight deck/cockpit crew interfaces to support an airworthiness safety certification process.

Course Content
  • An overview of how civil and military crew stations are designed, evaluated, and certified
  • A review of the physical, physiological, and cognitive performance capabilities of flight crews
  • Analysis of the ways HFE contributes to safe and desirable flight deck design
  • A review of the typical product development lifecycle as manifested within the context of human factors in flight deck design and certification
  • A review of the phases of user centered design (analysis, design, prototyping, evaluation)
  • Presentation on design history files and the type of information typically included
  • An overview of the certification process, including level of certification scrutiny, means of compliance, and compliance matrix
  • Introduction to the construction and staffing of an effective airworthiness certification package for the cockpit/flight deck
