Design Thinking Online

Course Description

The Design Thinking Online course covers key areas including curriculum development, customer discovery, product development, and program management using a deep thinking (DT) approach. Participants will explore the creative, empathetic, and iterative aspects of entrepreneurial education with an emphasis on idea generation, user research, and ethnography. Delivered in the experiential, creative-studio format inspired by the Design Bloc ethos, this workshop focuses on hands-on opportunities and real-world applications.

Course Content

Designer and Audience: Design Point of View

  • Highlight stakeholder points of view
  • Consider ways in which products, services, and experiences are received

Introduction to User Needs

  • Learn foundational concepts in need finding and solution concepts

Design Process

  • Introduction to creative, product development processes
  • Understanding the universal product development process

Understanding Users: Need Hierarchy and Innovation

  • Detailing visual ideation techniques, need hierarchy, social science
  • How need hierarchy can lead to disruptive products, services, and business concepts
  • Affinities and mapping as analytics methods

The Art of Brainstorming and Innovation

  • Proper techniques of brainstorming creatively and correctly
  • Potential pitfalls that impede brainstorming

Narrative and Storytelling

  • Basics of storytelling and narrative structure as an instrument of folk psychology

Stakeholder Analysis and Design Sprint Management

  • Undertake your own design sprint with an eye on identifying conflicts and opportunities in your stakeholder base
  • Focus on issues of importance, influence, forms of engagement and timing your sprint

Train the Trainer: Project Management advice for Novice DT Manager

  • Gain insight from DT managers in the field
  • Learn common pitfalls and identify advantages of the DT process in your own work
  • Discuss projects and usage of DT principles based on your own design sprint and resources
