FAQs

What is a MOOC? MOOC stands for “Massive Open Online Course.” These online courses make it possible for you to learn new skills and build your career credentials from anywhere in the world, at your own pace, and usually for free or at minimal cost. These courses are accessible to an unlimited amount of people, anywhere in the world with an Internet connection.

Who are the providers? Georgia Tech offers MOOC courses in partnership with Coursera, Udacity, and edX. Our world-renowned faculty design and deliver each course through these online learning platforms.

How do you take a MOOC? To enroll for a MOOC, you may register on any of our partner platforms: Coursera, Udacity, or EdX. Then, watch the pre-recorded lectures, learn from the course readings, and complete related work, like quizzes and in some cases, final projects. You can opt to earn a certificate or digital badge in recognition of your work. Some courses are also eligible for CEUs.

Why take a MOOC? A MOOC is a great way to brush up on your skills, earn valuable career-boosting credentials, and pick up new knowledge. MOOC courses are appealing because unlike traditional courses that require you to be physically present in a university lecture hall, you can take them no matter where you are in the world, often at your own pace and on your own schedule. You can earn certificates in recognition of your work, and some courses are even eligible for university credit or, in the case of our online master’s program in computer science, a master's degree from Georgia Tech!

Are the courses free? Most courses are free, though there is a small fee if you opt to work towards a certificate of completion. Some courses count toward university credit—and some, like our online master’s program in computer science, offer a full degree. These credit-bearing courses do have fees associated with them.

Can I receive CEUs from completed a MOOC? Yes, Georgia Tech offers CEUs for some completed MOOC courses taken through Coursera and edX. You have the option of purchasing CEUs after earning a verified course certificate.

What is a digital badge? A digital badge is an acknowledgement that you’ve successfully completed a MOOC course. You can display your digital badge on your online profiles, so that colleagues and employers can see your achievements at a glance.

What other credentials are available after completing a MOOC? You can earn CEUs, digital badges, and verified certificates of completion. We also offer an online master’s program in computer science, which you can complete for a fraction of the price of a traditional master’s degree.

Who issues the transcript or completion certification? Certificates of completion are issued by the online providers Coursera, Udacity, and edX. Although they are a great way to showcase your skills, they are not the same as official academic credit from Georgia Tech. However, if you purchase CEUs (which are denoted by a badge), then you can request an official GTPE transcript for free.
