What Is Open Online?

Open Online is a collection of massive open online courses (MOOCs) offered by Georgia Tech. Most of these courses are free and available to an unlimited number of people from anywhere in the world, so long as they have an Internet connection.

Georgia Tech offers dozens of MOOC courses in partnership with Coursera and edX. We also collaborate with Udacity to offer the Online Master’s of Computer Science at a fraction of the price of a traditional degree.

Our online courses contain many of the elements of traditional face-to-face classes, including:

  • Lectures (delivered via video)
  • Assigned readings
  • Quizzes
  • Problem sets
  • Projects
  • Online forums where students can connect with each other, the professors, and course TAs.

For a small fee, students who successfully complete a MOOC can earn a verified course certificate from our partners. They can then submit this certificate, along with an additional fee, to receive any of the following from Georgia Tech:

  • A Georgia Tech certificate of completion
  • CEUs on a Georgia Tech transcript (available for many of our MOOCs)
  • A digital badge to display on online profiles, as official recognition of completed coursework

More than one million students have enrolled in Georgia Tech’s MOOCs since their inception in 2012. Today, our massive open online courses are a pathway to lifelong learning for people all over the world—and a great way to earn credentials from a world-renowned institution consistently ranked among the top 10 public universities by U.S. News & World Report.
